Whitewater Rafting. Upper Animas River Trip.  The Upper Animas brings adventure enthusiasts from around the world to Durango. It is the quintessential whitewater experience! At high water, many consider this river to be the most difficult commercially run trip in the United States. Fourteen thousand-foot peaks rise from the banks of the river as you face continuous sections of whitewater that leave your arms shaking from the constant paddling. Cascading creeks and waterfalls pour into the river as you tackle the exciting rapids. As the high water of spring recedes, the Animas River settles down a bit and becomes suitable for those looking for a great wilderness trip with lots of technical whitewater, but not quite the intensity of high-water runoff in June. As water levels lower in mid summer so does the difficulty of the trip.  Age recommendations drop to 14 and the trip lowers in intensity from extreme to advanced with one portage for those rafters who are under age 16 or do not want to run the bigger rapid.  The ability to walk around the Class V rapids at more moderate water levels allows a larger spectrum of river enthusiasts to experience this magical Colorado rafting trip.

Guided Fly Fishing.  The Animas River runs through the City of Durango and is just a couple of blocks from the Duranglers Store. A stretch of 7 miles of public and private waters offers excellent fishing with just minutes of travel time. The Animas is a big broad river by the time it reaches Durango. Rainbow and brown trout populate the waters and are in the 10-15 inch range. Our guide service offers guided trips more than half a dozen rivers and streams in southwestern Colorado and northern New Mexico and has access to private water as well thorough knowledge of public water. Our outfitter is the top fly fishing shop in southwestern Colorado and has a guide service staff to match. Spend a day with them and you’ll not only catch fish but come back a better fisherman.

Ghost Towns Jeep Tour. Discover the awe-inspiring, beautiful Million Dollar Highway as we drive to Silverton. Along the way you will see the grandiose peaks of Grizzly Peak, Engineer Mountain, Pigeon and Turret, Spud Hills, the Twilights, and Snowdon, all before even reaching Molas Pass! At Molas Pass, a large section of the San Juan Mountains can be seen followed by Molas Lake, a high-alpine lake set against the backdrop of the San Juan Mountains. Passing through the old Victorian mining town of Silverton, established in the early 1870’s, we venture off road on old jeep trails heading northeast from Silverton through the old mining towns of Howardsville, Middleton and Eureka and climbing to 11,200 feet at Animas Forks. Spectacular cascading waterfalls and snowmelt rivers cool the air as we climb in elevation. The drive is peppered with remnants of old mining claims and tailings piles. Animas Forks is one of the most preserved mining ghost towns in Colorado, with buildings still standing surrounded by high mountain peaks and rolling alpine meadows. On the jeep trip you will see numerous wildflowers, high-alpine meadows, and avalanche gullies. Following the La Plata River (meaning “Silver” in Spanish) to La Plata City, an old mining town established in 1875, you’ll discover the remnants of old mining claims. These include a tall intact chimney left from the crew quarters, the framework of old cabins, and tailing piles from actual mining areas. Continue to the peak, Kennebec Pass at 12,000 feet above sea level (also above tree-line). Grand mountain vistas can be seen all the way to Cortez and even Telluride from the peak! High mountain peaks, river valleys, spruce-fir forests and high alpine-meadows can be observed from a bird’s eye view. Silverton Mountain Guided Skiing & Snowboarding. The only similarity to a ski resort is the one lift. This is advanced and expert skiing only. No cleared runs, no grooming. No running water at the mountain, bring your own. This is a unique experience similar to heli skiing and snowcat skiing with backcountry conditions and annual snowfall of over 400 inches. 1.819 acres with an 80 skier/rider per day maximum. You get 3-6 runs per day with your guide for around 10,000 vertical feet. Expect to hike boot pack 5-10 minutes from the top of the lift to reach some runs, hiking 15 minutes to 1 hour opens up a great deal more bowl and chute skiing. After each run you will return to the lift by shuttle or foot. A 10 minute walk may be required. During heavy snowfall you will ski primarily in the trees. Please be aware that if you are significantly holding up the rest of your group (hiking or skiing) they may try to move you to a slower paced group. If it is determined your fatigue or skill level becomes a safety hazard to yourself or others, you may possibly be asked by your guide to sit out the rest of the day(without refund). If you are unhappy with your group please inform your guide. Meet at the Silverton Mountain base area promptly at 8:20am for check-in, a safety talk, and riding. (Be sure to arrive at 8:15 if you are renting gear.) Groups are formed at the start of each day, there is no need to inform them ahead of time who you’d like to ski with. Groups are created according to self-assessed skill levels (fast, medium, slower) and by grouping of friends. Pay attention to your guide all day, exactly. The guide will only take you where he feels comfortable as their priority is your safety. The better you listen, the more the guide can open it up for you, (longer pitches, steeper lines etc). It is recommended that skis be a minimum of 110mm under foot. Wide powder skis and powder poles are available to rent. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY AN AVALANCHE BEACON, SHOVEL AND PROBE. RENTALS ARE AVAILABLE. A $12.00 lunch is available for purchase at the beginning of the day, otherwise bring your own food. This is a pure skiing experience that is not found anywhere else located in stunning mountains near a small mountain village. It’s truly an AMH Special Experience.

Silverton Mountain One Drop Heli Skiing. Heli Ski/Heli Board drops to spectacular terrain can be purchased in single run increments from Silverton Guides for only $159 per run (plus lift ticket: $139) bringing the possibility of heli skiing to those with big boards but a small bank roll. It is a great way to see more of the mountain. Stellar terrain options with big lines available…Miles and miles of terrain…Higher caliber skiers on higher caliber terrain…Excellent snow quality due to highest elevation in North America…Silverton had only 3 down days during the 08/09 heli season…Chairlift backup…Colorado sunshine…Above and below treeline skiing options. Silverton Mountain has been using a small helicopter to conduct avalanche control for several years at the ski area and uses heli drops to help offset the costs. Silverton Guides has access to an A-Star B3 heli which we feel is the best heli in the world. With the higher costs and the poor accuracy of the avalauncher rounds, a helicopter is now the best tool for conducting avalanche control at Silverton Mountain and especially on the distant and most amazing ski terrain. This is also great news for unguided skiers as the helicopter avalanche control program helps get additional unguided ski terrain open faster. The heli drops are available starting Dec 17 which is usually a great time to ride with light powder on all aspects. All helicopters are provided, staffed, insured, and maintained by 3rd party independent contractors.

Silverton Mountain Heli Skiing and Boarding Includes 6 heli runs (minimum of 3 people required) with more than 22,000 acres of ski terrain.
