Telluride, Colorado

SnowRecognized for its heritage, recreational opportunities, and spectacular scenery, Telluride is named for the 90-mile-long San Miguel River.  Its rich heritage is tied to the surrounding mountain landscape. The Ute Indians, who made the area their home, would travel to the valley in the summer season, using the mountains as protection from the elements and as a source for food and other goods.  During the late 19th century mining boom, gold and silver were found in the mountains.  At the turn of the century, the mountains and the powerful waterfalls nestled within, were instrumental in the discovery of alternating current by L.L. Nunn.  Later, the breathtaking mountain terrain saved Telluride from becoming a ghost town after the mining boom ended, and helped to turn it into a world- class destination.  Today, Telluride is both a bustling ski town and western icon jewel. Clapboard storefronts open up to art galleries, old-time bars and eclectic eateries. Telluride and neighboring Mountain Village are connected by a free gondola, the only transportation system of its kind in North America.
