Telluride Activities

Telluride Helitrax. Helicopter Skiing and Snowboarding.

Our terrain is some of the highest in North America: ranging from 10,000 to 13,500 feet. Each run drops 1,000 to 2,500 feet—approximately 300-800 meters. We ride over 200 square miles North, South & East of Telluride. Telluride Helitrax is one of the smallest heli-ski operations in the U.S. Up to twenty seats are available each day, but the average is only twelve. Skiers are sorted by reservation groups, ability and helicopter load weight. We try to accommodate groups but a private cabin ensures riding together.

Each day includes six runs of guided heli-skiing, food & drinks, and equipment. You need only to wear your normal ski clothes and ski boots. Unfortunately due to weight constraints, we cannot accommodate packs.
Heli-skiing can be strenuous; a reasonable fitness condition is encouraged. Strong adventurous-intermediate through expert skiers will find our terrain both fun and spectacular. Snowboarders are always welcome, but should be comfortable with long traverses.
Although we heli-ski in avalanche terrain, our avalanche forecast program is top notch—as is our safety record. If inclement weather interferes with your heli-ski trip you can reschedule or your deposit will be refunded.

Ability: Helitrax terrain is moderate angle, clients should be comfortable skiing single black diamond runs. Strong intermediate through expert skiers welcome, there is no age limit.

SINGLE DAY HELI TRIP : This is our classic trip. Whether you are new to Heli-skiing or a Heli-ski veteran, our single day trips always deliver. We will take you and a small group of like minded powder hounds in our Bell 407 Helicopter to some of the finest skiing Colorado has to offer. Included are six guided helicopter ski runs totaling approximately 10,000-12,000 vertical feet as well as powder skis, backcountry poles, avalanche beacon and food and water throughout the day. A safety orientation, helicopter briefing and avalanche protocol expectations are covered in a morning meeting and an apres’ ski is provided to complete your day. Transportation to the field may be provided by passenger van.

MULTI DAY HELI SKI TRIPS: For those powder skiers that just can’t get enough we offer 2 day – 5 day heli-ski trips. We will sign you up for several days and get you out when the weather allows. If it is dumping you get to rip it up on the Telluride Ski Mountain instead of hanging out in a lodge. With our wide variety of terrain we will keep things fresh and exciting every day. So go for it. We will provide 6 or more runs per day along with food, powder skis, safety equipment, apres’ ski and a good time. Give us a call to discuss the possibilities.

PRIVATE HELI SKI CABIN: This is not a log cabin in the woods. Get yourself and 3 friends together and we will put you with one of our best guides and off you go. Booking a private cabin ensures your group will ride and fly together. This package saves you money and provides us the opportunity to really tune the day towards your groups pace and ability.

BACKCOUNTRY SKIING: Do you prefer to ski in the backcountry on your own terms? Nobody knows the San Juan mountains in the winter like the guides at Telluride Helitrax. Everyone of us is an active backcountry skier with an intimate knowledge of the surrounding mountains. Not for the faint of heart, our tours require at least 1 1/2 hours of uphill travel to reap the rewards, but they are well worth it. All trips include an avalanche orientation, beacon, transportation and lunch. We can also put together a spectacular helicopter assisted back-country tour for small groups on a limited basis. These tours are world class, you will not be disappointed. Transportation by passenger van.

SCENIC HELICOPTER FLIGHTS: Lift off from either the Peaks Resort or the Telluride Airport and enjoy one of the most scenic and exhilarating scenic flights available anywhere in the world. 15 minute flights are offered each afternoon (weather dependent). Each scenic flight can carry 4 to 5 passengers. Don’t forget your camera.

Silverton Mountain Heliskiing. Silverton, 1 3/4  hour drive.  Includes 6 heli runs (minimum of 3 people required) with more than 22,000 acres of ski terrain. Silverton has chairlift accessed backup skiing available for you at no extra charge if your trip is cancelled once underway (rarely happens) weather etc. Why Heli Silverton? Stellar terrain options with big lines available…Miles and miles of terrain…Higher caliber skiers on higher caliber terrain…Excellent snow quality due to highest elevation in North America…Silverton had only 3 down days during the 08/09 heli season…Chairlift backup…Colorado sunshine…Above and below treeline skiing options.   Silverton Mountain has been using a small helicopter to conduct avalanche control for several years at the ski area and uses heli drops to help offset the costs. Silverton Guides has access to an A-Star B3 heli which we feel is the best heli in the world. With the higher costs and the poor accuracy of the avalauncher rounds, a helicopter is now the best tool for conducting avalanche control at Silverton Mountain and especially on the distant and most amazing ski terrain. This is also great news for unguided skiers as the helicopter avalanche control program helps get additional unguided ski terrain open faster. The heli drops are available starting Dec 17 which is usually a great time to ride with light powder on all aspects. All helicopters are provided, staffed, insured, and maintained by 3rd party independent contractors.

Silverton Mountain Guided Skiing. The only similarity to a ski resort is the one lift. This is advanced and expert skiing only. No cleared runs, no grooming. No running water at the mountain, bring your own. This is a unique experience similar to heli skiing and snowcat skiing with backcountry conditions and annual snowfall of over 400 inches. 1.819 acres with an 80 skier/rider per day maximum. You get 3-6 runs per day with your guide for around 10,000 vertical feet. Expect to hike boot pack 5-10 minutes from the top of the lift to reach some runs, hiking 15 minutes to 1 hour opens up a great deal more bowl and chute skiing. After each run you will return to the lift by shuttle or foot. A 10 minute walk may be required. During heavy snowfall you will ski primarily in the trees. Please be aware that if you are significantly holding up the rest of your group (hiking or skiing) they may try to move you to a slower paced group. If it is determined your fatigue or skill level becomes a safety hazard to yourself or others, you may possibly be asked by your guide to sit out the rest of the day(without refund). If you are unhappy with your group please inform your guide. Meet at the Silverton Mountain base area promptly at 8:20am for check-in, a safety talk, and riding. (Be sure to arrive at 8:15 if you are renting gear.) Groups are formed at the start of each day, there is no need to inform them ahead of time who you’d like to ski with. Groups are created according to self-assessed skill levels (fast, medium, slower) and by grouping of friends. Pay attention to your guide all day, exactly. The guide will only take you where he feels comfortable as their priority is your safety. The better you listen, the more the guide can open it up for you, (longer pitches, steeper lines etc). It is recommended that skis be a minimum of 110mm under foot. Wide powder skis and powder poles are available to rent. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CARRY AN AVALANCHE BEACON, SHOVEL AND PROBE. RENTALS ARE AVAILABLE. A $12.00 lunch is available for purchase at the beginning of the day, otherwise bring your own food. This is a pure skiing experience that is not found anywhere else located in stunning mountains near a small mountain village. It’s truly an AMH Special Experience.

Silverton Mountain One Drop Heli Skiing & Riding.
